237) Day 5 -- Reason #5 to revolt against Predatory Capitalism
I grew up in a small town. And now, one of my former schoolmates has the dishonour of making the list of institutions/people in Canada who spent, last year, the most $$$ on MISLEADING the public about Canada's carbon tax!! AKA, lying to our faces. Way to go, Scott Aitchison! When was "the environment" ever important to Huntsvillians anyway, right?
Yes, you know how there's all this talk about Canada's "terrible carbon tax"? You know how Pierre Poilievre and his ilk are telling Canadians that the oh-so-hated Carbon Tax, evil machination of Trudeau, is driving inflation and making us all struggle to afford food?
Well, it's just not true. It is a bald-faced lie. But it sure gets voters to hate the Liberals, eh?
Careful, non-partisan analyses put the effects of the carbon tax on inflation at less than 1% (i.e., less than 1/20th of all inflation we've experienced, which amounts to about 0.8% inflation). To find the real drivers of inflation, we have to look at, first of all, global economic issues especially following COVID and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Trudeau and the Liberals have nothing to do with and every economy on the planet has struggled to recover from, with or without a carbon tax in their economies.
And then, look at corporate profits, at tax loopholes, and at HUGE public investment in the fossil fuel industry (i.e., your tax dollars being given as gifts ("subsidies") to oil companies) , which have all been nailed into the Canadian economy by the Conservative Party especially, for decades (although the Libs get historical blame here too, as they are also controlled by the oil companies), as they sold our country increasingly to foreign-owned mega-corporations and the billionaire class. This has been happening for our entire lives, and the Conservatives, year after year, decade after decade, have championed it.
So the carbon tax, while having a TINY effect on inflation, is helping to transform Canada's energy system, which is currently about the dirtiest on the entire planet, and would, without this transformation, in the very near term, become increasingly terrible for the Canadian economy as the world increasingly shifts away from fossil fuels.
Google "stranded assets", and understand that BILLION$$ of public dollars have subsidized the oil industry, leading Canada into a prison of its own making. All cheer-leaded by the anti-environmental party of Canada, AKA the Conservatives.
Thanks Scott Aitchison. What a good Huntsville lad you are, helping to kill our environment while also long-term killing our economy, while also lying to your former friends and neighbours, and the people who voted you into power.
But "the public" generally doesn't understand this, because why? Well, we sure hear a lot about the terrible carbon tax, don't we? And who do we hear this from?
Take a look.

And for the Open Letter signed by a gazillion economists and professors at Canadian universities, regarding the carbon tax take a look here --

So remember this when we vote. We have a Donald Trump situation in Canada, with a politician leading the polls who is flat-out lying to Canadians, pretending to be "for the people", just like Doug Ford did, while actually a sell-out to Big Oil and mega-corporations. They say they care about the "average person", while literally stealing from us to line their own bloated pockets.
This is disgusting, and Canadians deserve to know the truth, not corporate lies spread by politicians.
